Dear Joyce,
My daughter started school this year for the first time (1st grade). She was previously home schooled. Everything is going well, but she’s emotional, and I’m afraid that the first time that she gets into trouble, she’ll fall apart. For example, she almost got a yellow (everyone starts on green), and she started crying. Is there something I should do to prepare her?
Betty
Dear Betty,
Typically, just like the adults, children express more at home than in the public arena. Parents are often surprised at how well their children do when they are in other situations. Every hour that your child is at home, you are still “home- schooling!â€Â Make use of the time to talk about the rules of school and how to stay “out of trouble.â€Â Also discuss that if she does get into trouble she should admit it, say, “I’m sorry!†and move on. Most teachers are equipped to help children with their meltdowns.
Love, Joyce
