{"id":582,"date":"2015-12-02T18:09:13","date_gmt":"2015-12-03T02:09:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/warmanloving.org\/site\/?p=582"},"modified":"2022-07-26T17:24:25","modified_gmt":"2022-07-27T00:24:25","slug":"parent-adventure-planning-the-adventure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/warmanloving.org\/site\/parent-adventure-planning-the-adventure\/","title":{"rendered":"Parent Adventure:  Planning the Adventure"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Before planning any big trip or adventure, we need to create a plan (choose destination, pick a route, pack the bags, Go!).\u00a0This is the same in the parenting adventure!<em> \u00a0We need to create a plan for our children to reach their final destination. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p><strong>PARENTHOOD ITINERARY<br><\/strong><br>DEPARTURE<br><em>Birth<\/em><\/p><p>DESTINATION<br><em>Responsible Adulthood<\/em><\/p><p>ROUTE<br><em>Biblical Modeling<\/em><\/p><p>LUGGAGE<br><em>Bible Scripture, Prayer, Parenting Resources\/Classes, Youth Groups, Schooling, Extra-Curricular Activities<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>What is our parenting road map for this journey?\u00a0We can easily characterize the path\u00a0through different\u00a0landmarks or life stages.\u00a0In each life stage, there are elements that we as parents\u00a0can focus on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Infant (Parents: Provide physical care and nurturing)<\/li><li>Preschool (Parents: Model &amp; mentor, give commands &amp; consequences)<\/li><li>Elementary (Parents: Continue to build on preschool training and teach\u00a0communication, competence, character development)<\/li><li>Pre-Adolescence, 9-11 yrs (Parents:\u00a0Help prep for adolescence, answer questions.\u00a0Child: physical changes begin)<\/li><li>Early Adolescence, 11-14 yrs (Parents:\u00a0Build on previous years, begin releasing to responsibility.\u00a0Child: Enters puberty, searches for identity, emotionally volatile.)<\/li><li>Mid-Adolescence, 14-18 yrs (Parents:\u00a0Still releasing to responsibility.\u00a0Child:\u00a0Peer influence, egocentric &amp; self-absorbed, experimenting. )<\/li><li>Late Adolescence \/ Emerging Adulthood, 18-25 yrs (Parent:\u00a0Appropriate release to full responsibility. Child:\u00a0Making moral decisions, start\u00a0financial responsibility.)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>What are some of the <strong>travel challenges<\/strong> we face on the parenting journey?\u00a0EXHAUSTION! Who isn&#8217;t tired these days?\u00a0We either lack sleep or burn the candle at both ends. It always feels like there is a sink full of dishes, dirty laundry,\u00a0and not enough time. Marriages also take a back seat due to the immediate needs of children. If we aren&#8217;t careful, what may feel like a sensible divide-and-conquer parenting plan may turn into two adults running on different highways going in opposite directions.\u00a0We need to be mindful of these <strong>roadblocks <\/strong>to make sure we don&#8217;t hit a dead end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What are the best <strong>detours<\/strong> around parenting roadblocks?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Travel as a TEAM.<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0Schedule family planning sessions or management meetings with your spouse to discuss weekly commitments, long term goals, financial planning, holidays, vacations, birthdays.\u00a0Make a plan and utilize your calendar to follow through.\u00a0As your children get older, help them with <em>their plans <\/em>(planning out their daily\/weekly schedule, spend-save-give strategies, managing technology, driving, college . . .)<\/li><li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Take time.<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0We live in an age with a lot of <em>hurry-up<\/em>&#8216;s, <em>we&#8217;re-late<\/em>&#8216;s, and <em>there&#8217;s-not-enough-time<\/em>&#8216;s. Sometimes we rush out of habit.\u00a0We need to take the time to make time.\u00a0Omit one or two things from the day or week to give yourself more\u00a0breathing room.\u00a0Create some quiet time for your family to refuel before you jump into the next thing.<\/li><li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Don&#8217;t compare or judge.<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0Everyone is on a different journey.\u00a0When we compare, we create more more internal noise in our\u00a0own\u00a0life with worry, disappointment, and jealousy.\u00a0Instead,\u00a0&#8220;<em><span id=\"en-NIV-30214\" class=\"text Heb-12-1\">since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the [road] marked out for us,<\/span><\/em><span id=\"en-NIV-30215\" class=\"text Heb-12-2\"><em><sup class=\"versenum\"> <\/sup><\/em><\/span><span id=\"en-NIV-30215\" class=\"text Heb-12-2\"><em><sup class=\"versenum\">\u00a0<\/sup>fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.<\/em>&#8221; [Hebrews 12:1-2]\u00a0Don&#8217;t let comparison steal your JOY.<\/span><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The Parent Adventure is full of opportunities and new paths. \u00c2&nbsp;In each life stage, as we train our children, the Lord has amazing things to teach us, as parents, as he refines our character.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Before planning any big trip or adventure, we need to create a plan (choose destination, pick a route, pack the bags, Go!).\u00a0This is the same in the parenting adventure! \u00a0We need to create a plan for our children to reach their final destination.
