{"id":148,"date":"2011-03-31T10:51:15","date_gmt":"2011-03-31T17:51:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/warmanloving.org\/site\/?p=148"},"modified":"2011-05-09T16:51:40","modified_gmt":"2011-05-09T23:51:40","slug":"battle-of-wills","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/warmanloving.org\/site\/battle-of-wills\/","title":{"rendered":"Battle of Wills"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/warmanloving.org\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/201103Post01.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-150 alignleft\" title=\"Strong Will Post\" src=\"http:\/\/warmanloving.org\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/201103Post01-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"Sarah J Photography\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/warmanloving.org\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/201103Post01-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/warmanloving.org\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/201103Post01.jpg 451w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/><\/a>At one point or another, every family experiences a <em>confrontation of the wills<\/em>.\u00c2\u00a0 You may experience it daily with your bright and precocious child who tries to run your family and demands attention.\u00c2\u00a0 Your preschooler may speak with authority, even if they are wrong.\u00c2\u00a0 Your 10-year old may argue with you about most everything.\u00c2\u00a0 Or your easy-going, bubbly child may ask for just one more hug, one more kiss, one more drink of water, . . . to delay bedtime.\u00c2\u00a0 There is no getting around the fact that children will express their will.<\/p>\n<p>The battle of the wills is frustrating and exhausting for parents of strong-willed children.\u00c2\u00a0 We are criticized by others and blame ourselves.\u00c2\u00a0 Here are some insights that help us to shape our kids and mold their character:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Be firm early.<\/strong> Have a plan for consequences before confrontations happen.\u00c2\u00a0 This helps to curb the emotional blow-ups when the battles begin.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pick issues carefully. <\/strong> Decide which issues are the BIG ones, and make sure you win on those.\u00c2\u00a0 Remain calm, but put the microscope on the right issues (character, respect, obedience, etc).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Allow for leadership and choices.<\/strong> Those with strong-wills have opportunity to be great leaders!\u00c2\u00a0 Allow them to take more responsibility for things.\u00c2\u00a0 Teach them that good leaders are encouraging and recognize the talents of others.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reinforce their belonging. <\/strong> Separate who they are, from what they do.\u00c2\u00a0 Have one-on-one time with your child to remind you and him that you are on the same team.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Teach that God is the Highest Power!<\/strong> Just as children have to submit to authority, explain that Mom &amp; Dad must to submit to their authorities.\u00c2\u00a0 We are all under the umbrella authority of God, and our faith in God gives us the freedom to make choices that honor one another.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Recognize the difference between personality and roles.<\/strong> Don&#8217;t be &#8220;popular&#8221;
